Architecture labs: the “avant-garde” in Japan

With the 80,000 students and large numbers of practitioners, architecture is a highly valued profession in Japan. Architecture laboratories are particularly successful, with departments heads bringing their names and reputations to the productions of these workshops, leading to renewed emulation. Laboratories play a large part in the education of future architects, guiding the students’ research of all three levels and providing a place where they may intersect and even collaborate.
