Opening of Perrotin Tokyo with the exhibit Pierre Soulages

On June 7th 2017, Perrotin opened a new gallery in Tokyo, in the area of Roppongi. This new exhibit space is located at the ground level of the Piramide building. It is the 17th space of Emmanuel Perrotin in 27 years, amongst them a gallery in Hong Kong (opened in 2012) and another in Seoul (opened in 2016), already establishing a connection between the French art dealer and the Asian art scene.

Emmanuel Perrotin has long supported relationships between asian artists and western galleries. He was the first to exhibit the work of Takashi Murakami outside of Japan, in the United States of America. He also took part in many art fairs throughout Asia, starting in 1994 with the NICAF Art Fair in Yokohama, Japan.

The Piramide building, built in the 90’s, hosts other established galleries such as London Gallery, Ota Fine Arts, Wako Works of Art, YKG / Yutaka Kikutake Gallery, and Zen Foto Gallery. Other galleries, lke ShugoArts, Taka Ishii Gallery, Tomio Koyama Gallery, are located in the “Complex 665” building right next to the Piramide building. The Roppongi area is known for its many galleries and museums, such as Mori Art Museum, Suntory Museum of Art, National Art Center, Kaikai Kiki gallery, and Take Ninagawa gallery.

The new exhibit space, 130 square meters large, is still very intimate. The architect André Fu and his studio AFSO have designed the gallery as a contemporary space all the while respecting the local Japanese culture. The visual connection between the indoors and the outdoors was a main focus in the design of the gallery.
