A SPECIAL REPORT ON HERITAGE
L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui devotes its 386th issue to heritage.
The "FOCUS ON" section develops an international view of the issue, exploring five significant examples. Beirut and its war scars, New Orleans and the question of natural disasters, the singularities of the Japanese concept of heritage via Tokyo, the difficulties in reconverting the churches in Quebec and China’s awakening to its heritage, between imitations and preservation.
The “PROJECTS” section selects four exemplary and contemporary rehabilitation approaches: Patrick BOUCHAIN’s Magasin in Grenoble (France), Bernard KHOURY’s Centrale in Beirut (Lebanon), the Sitterwerk in Saint-Gall (Switzerland) and the competition on rehabilitating the housing units of the Gardenstadt Süd in Bremen (Germany), just recently won by the LIN agency.
Heritage questions have always created controversy as shown by the "REPRINTS" section that presents major Parisian quarrels published in past editions of the magazine. These texts on Les Halles, Orsay and the Louvre’s Pyramid are moreover echoed in the text published in the “THOUGHTS” section: “On Demolition” by Françoise CHOAY.

A MANIFESTO FOR A GENERATION
ASSEMBLE is a group of young English architects who see the potential of derelict contemporary urban sites and reveal it to their fellow Londoners. All in their early twenties, these architects have a guilt-free outlook on modernity that mixes architecture and action and puts the city, its freedom, its identity and its limits to the test. Here, in post-riot London, we take a closer look at a group of people who built two rough and temporary cinemas, Cineroleum in 2010 and Folly for a Flyover in 2011.

BUILT REFLECTIONS
In the depths of Charente, the Domaine de Boisbuchet has been welcoming the most creative names in the design community for many years. On the banks of the Vienne river, the chateau and outbuildings have been patiently restored and the site now offers a surprising mixture of historical and contemporary constructions. For nearly three decades, this unique estate has witnessed a long procession of the top designers of the present and the future.

A FLYING CARPET
In the heart of the Louvre, the Visconti Court drapes itself in an avant-garde veil to host the Arts of Islam. A brilliant "lighter-than-air" concept by Mario BELLINI and Rudy RICCIOTTI.

A TREASURE TO BE CULTIVATED
Fragile and long neglected by heritage protection laws, gardens and landscapes are gradually gaining new recognition. Whether modern or historical, these constantly changing works of art are now better protected by law and are becoming increasingly popular with the public.

A NEW FORM OF THE SUBLIME
Photographing cities, museum visitors and, more recently, the meandering lines of industrial machinery, the German Thomas STRUTH, who was born in West Germany in 1954, examines a new form of the sublime in our materiality.

BACK FROM ATHENS
Seven years after the Summer Games of 2004, Athens views its Olympic experience as a mitigated success. The Greek metropolis of four million inhabitants made organizing the Games its ultimate goal. But while development work enabled Athens to do some catching up, the king of overall improvement originally hoped for have not materialized. Empty stadiums, unfinished developments, ghettoes for the rich and run-down neighbourhoods: between philosophical acceptance and remorse, a portrait of a city deeply wounded by the ideal it set for itself.

ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL AT CHAILLOT
Since 1887, the Ecole de Chaillot -now the training department of the Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine in Paris- has trained architects specializing in heritage conservation, for the private and public sectors, and interested in the contemporary appropriation of existing buildings and old cities. Most of the ACMH (Chief Architects of Historic Monuments) and ABF (National Heritage Architects) have attended the school.
A look at the training proposed with Mireille GRUBERT, director of the Ecole de Chaillot
